Though she is literally the person introducing young women to the porn industry, Rayne never comes across as devious or manipulative. Instead, she’s almost the complete opposite, telling her new recruits so much about the hurdles and evils of the industry, you wonder why anyone stays. However, Rayne is at her most interesting and compelling when she’s talking about finance. Throughout the documentary’s 5. Rayne constantly emphasizes how important it is for porn stars to retain ownership of their own videos. The episode’s talking head footage of Rayne explaining the ways pornography allows women to benefit from doing something they enjoy is intercut with footage of the mentor teaching her new recruits how to start their own site or open a bank account. She’s even called a role model and maternal on more than one occasion.

The atmosphere Rayne creates is so sweet and nurturing, it’s easy for forget that the porn industry typically doesn’t have this rosy of a reputation. Rayne’s loving sex work bubble is challenged by Bonnie’s story. Bonnie is not unlike may women who enter porn. She’s from out of town — in this case Oklahoma — grew up with little money, and wants to find a way to give her younger siblings the life she never had. Initially, Bonnie’s introduction to porn seems fairly routine, and she seems to be doing well. However, footage from her various shoots is soon interrupted by a call from the overdosed Bonnie.

A little more than halfway through the documentary, “Owning It” starts to chronicle Bonnie’s descent into drug abuse as well as her on- the- job hospitalizations. It’s while Bonnie continues to plummet that the narrative around Turned On shifts. Though Rayne is still supportive, she’s no longer the doting mother from the beginning of the episode.

A few scenes later, the focus of the film shifts back to John, a ponytailed, middle- aged agent who is completely stable in the industry. However, Turned On’s third episode does what this series does best.
